The 2015 ICAS Workshop and Programme Committee Meeting was held in Krakow. The aim of the committee meeting was to make preparations for the upcoming ICAS Congress which is planned to be in September in Deajeon, South Korea. The organizer of this year’s meeting was the Polish Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics,  chaired by the director of the Institute of Aviation, professor Witold Wiśniowski.

The workshops are organized between congresses, always in odd years. The last workshop dedicated to complex systems integration in aeronautics was held in Krakow. All presentations are available on the ICAS official website (www.icas.org).

The ICAS Workshop gathered 100 participants, mainly ICAS Programme Committee members, elected by the national associations for aviation research, who represented countries on the highest level in the field of aviation from all over the world.

Research papers were presented by the representatives of the leading aviation companies (Airbus, SAAB, Embraer, Australian Aerospace Division, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries,  Thales, Aviation Industry Corporation of China).

The speakers were scientific and R&D directors. The participants of the workshop were welcomed by the ICAS President – dr Christian Mari – who stressed in his speech that “once again in the series ICAS workshops leading specialists, in the number of 70, representing global aviation were gathered to discuss important issues of complex systems integration together with leading representatives of the world’s largest manufacturers”.

The welcoming presentation on the Polish research and production sector was delivered by the director of the Institute of Aviation and President of the PSAA, professor Witold Wiśniowski.

The current level of development in an increasingly integrated air systems resulting from the various requirements (safety, ecology and others) presented in detail: Sebastien REMY, Airbus Group Innovations (France), João Reginato, Embraer Chief Engineer’s Office (Brazil) and Junichi Miyakawa, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Japan).

Philip Fossier CTO Land & Air Systems THALES and Stefan ROEMELTVice President and Head of Avionics Platforms & Electrical Systems Airbus Operations S.A.S. from Tulusa presented a new evolutionary approach to the validation and verification of complex airbone systems.

Dr Zhang from AVIC (China) and dr Anderson from Defence Science & Technology Group (Australia) focused in their papers on the approach to the so-called large systems, or otherwise “system of systems”. They also mentioned the needs of the application of new educational methods (including the introduction of new school subject) to facilitate quick introduction of future graduates in the work in the industry on the integration of complex aircraft systems. Dr Ying put the thesis that the old principle of “divide into subsystems and then search for solutions” (divide then conquer) to replace with a new one with a different philosophy of “search for solutions and then divide into subsystems” (conquer then divide).

Evaluation of the conference and running the Program Committee Meeting – repeatedly uttered in Krakow by the participants – was clear: the conference was a great success of ICAS, and its organization (including various special events) shows the excellent preparation of the entire project by the PSAA – the main organizer of this important scientific event.
