10th Night at the Institute of Aviation

Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation invites you to the biggest educational night event in Poland – 10th Night at the Institute of Aviation. The main theme of this year’s event will be the mysteries of space.  The event will take place on October 11th, 2019 at the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation in Warsaw, 110/114 Krakowska Avenue from 5 p.m. till 11 p.m.

The special guest of the event will be Artur Chmielewski Polish engineer, space mission manager, working in the California Jet Propulsion Laboratory – NASA, who will share the details of his work within the famous Rosetta project and the missions Galileo, Ulysses and Cassini-Huygens, as well as the current missions organized by the U.S. space agency.

Karol Wójcicki, a well-known popularizer of science, will talk about the SpaceX revolution. Guests of the lecture will learn how our thinking about space flights is changing and how they will translate into our reality in the near future.

We are excited that we have managed to gather this year so many great speakers and exhibitors who want to share their knowledge, experience and passion related to space. We will host enthusiasts from student scientific circles, technical universities and many institutions, such as the Polish Space Agency, the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences or
the Copernicus Science Centre. We will show the Polish contribution to the exploration of space and the successes of Polish engineers in designing rockets, Martian rovers and space probes. This year’s offer for space fans is really wide, and what is most important, adapted to guests of all ages says Magda Wiejacha, the organizer of the Night.

The youngest will have an opportunity to see, among others, an exhibition of space vehicles made of blocks, night observations of the sky through a telescope, workshops on coding by means of edurobots and numerous workshops and games.

Special attractions for fans of new technologies have been prepared by the Polish Astronomical Society. Thanks to computers it will be possible to make a safe (virtual) journey into the orbit of a black hole. Using the KINECT motion sensor and special software, everyone will be able to see live how the famous bending of space-time by massive bodies works. Numerous shows will be supported by applications on tablets and smartphones and separately by VR technology.

On the occasion of this year’s anniversary of the moon landing, together with animators from the Copernicus Science Centre, it will be possible to find the landing place of the Apollo 11 mission in the satellite photographs of the Moon surface and watch a TV broadcast from 50 years ago documenting this epochal event.

According to the main theme of the event, visitors will be able to see … representatives of foreign civilizations Predator, Alien and Transformers, who will be waiting for daredevils in various corners of the institute.

The event will also include airplanes and helicopters. The static exhibition will feature, among others, the most famous combat aircraft of the Polish Air Force – F-16 which will be demonstrated by the F-16 Tiger Demo Team Poland associated with the 31. Visitors will have the opportunity to talk with pilots of aerobatic groups and meet exceptional guests of the discussion panel „EXTREME AIR: precision, speed, courage, or a unique air spectacle”: Colonel Piotr Iwaszko – Deputy Commander of 1. Wings of Tactical Aviation, Captain Jacek Stolarek pilot of the 23rd Tactical Aviation Base, Wojciech Bógdał individual motoparaglider world champion, Maria Muś professional pilot and helicopter instructor and Jan Makula representative of the National Team in glider aerobatics. The discussion will be moderated by pilot Witold Sokół. Panel participants will talk about „flying on the edge” and their road to success.

The event will also be enriched by numerous dynamic shows this year the roar of engines will be heard several times during the entire event. The schedule of the shows includes triple firing of the TS-11 Iskra aircraft jet engine belonging to the White and Red Wings Foundation (Fundacja Biało-Czerwone Skrzydła) and double starting of the historic engine from the period of World War II P&W 1340 of the historic T-6 Harvard aircraft under the care of Jacek Mainka from the Flying Museum of the Polish Air Force Foundation (Fundacja Latające Muzeum Polskich Sił Powietrznych).

The shows will be accompanied by musical performances with a parade drill prepared by the Military Orchestra in Radom.

Aviation fans will also be interested in a wide range of flight simulators and virtual reality, thanks to which you will be able to sit at the controls of the A320 passenger aircraft (the largest simulator in Poland, JetZone24), the most modern F-35 fighter (Pratt&Whitney) and look inside the Dreamliner aircraft (LS Airport Services).

Once again, fire engines and numerous vehicles for maintaining the surface from the F. Chopin Airport (including the Urals plough the first public presentation) will be presented. Additional attractions prepared especially for the fans of the Night by the State Enterprise Chopin Airport (Przedsiębiorstwo Państwowe Porty Lotnicze – Lotnisko Chopina ) will also be: ground lighthouse of the company „AGA” (the lighthouse worked at the Okęcie from the first half of the 30s to the 60s, will also be made available to the wider public for the first time), advanced visual system of docking aircraft and a set of signalling lamps with plates and taxiways at the airport.

The history of Polish and foreign aviation will be presented at numerous displays and exhibitions. For the first time at the Night, models of one of the most beautiful fighters of the US Navy, the F-14, will be presented. Visitors will have the opportunity to photograph beautifully illuminated historic planes, learn about the history of the 303 Squadron, look into the zone of reconstruction groups and play one of the large-format board aviation games. An opportunity to talk about the history of Polish aviation will also be a meeting with the author – Stanisław Śmist, the writer of a book recently reprinted by the Scientific Publishers of the Institute of Aviation, entitled „My Aviation. Truths and myths about aviation and other stories”, touching upon the subject of the Polish plane Iryda.

For spotters and amateurs interested in aerial photography there will be workshops conducted by Sławomir „Hesja” Krajniewski, an undisputed authority in this field. There will also be a viewing terrace where you will be able to take unique night-time pictures.

The only night of the year will also be an opportunity to visit the laboratories of the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Institute of Aviation inaccessible on a daily basis, such as the Materials Laboratory where tests of commercial engines, gas, steam and wind turbines, reciprocating compressors and coating elements for the aviation, energy and mining industries are conducted, as well as the Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics Laboratory the only such place in Poland (and one of the few in Europe), which conducts comprehensive research related to the cooling of turbine engine components both aircraft and industrial. The Institute will host, among others, the largest wind tunnel in Central and Eastern Europe, where Polish ski jumpers have been training for years,
the ILR-33 „AMBER” (BURSZTYN) rocket, which after the last edition of the Night passed another test flight, the MOSUPS unmanned aerial vehicle, the SUDIL antidrone system, as well as aviation engines and products related to aviation, space and remote sensing.

The engineers of the institute will also coordinate the event accompanying the EDC Hackathon 2019 Drones. During 24 hours, teams of software and hardware technicians will work together to address unusual challenges in the areas of programming, unmanned aerial systems and data analysis. The task of the participants will be to build a communication system with the unmanned aerial vehicle. Data coming from a drone will require processing and interpretation, after which they will be used to control and perform tasks.

The 10th Night at the Institute of Aviation will be staged by the most famous Warsaw DJ-duo of Exboyfriends: Piotr Kędzierski and Krystian Kościjański, who will start their set at 20:00 in a futuristic rotunda for helicopter tests.

Guests of the event will be able to reach the venue by a specially marked, historical tram that will run from Starynkiewicz Square to the P+R, Al. Krakowska stop between 4:30 p.m. till 11:00 p.m.. A specific timetable will be given on the website of the organizer of the Night. The ride for the participants of the event will be free of charge.
